Jack’s Abby has a lighter coloration, with both brews being quite translucent.īoth brews retained a comparable ring of foam, but Zicke Zacke has the advantage on lacing. Zicke Zacke is an insanely light-bodied and quite highly carbonated brew. BodyĬopper Legend is a mid-bodied, low carbonation, and incredibly smooth brew. Running total: Jack’s Abby 1-2 Elsewhere. Unsurprisingly, this one has to go to Jack’s Abby. If anything, it’s almost a hoppy pale ale in flavor. This is a really enjoyable brew, but it doesn’t really fit the mold for Oktoberfest brew in my view. It’s a hop-forward and slightly bitter brew with borderline citrusy undertones. Zicke Zacke offers a tremendously intense flavor, but it’s not why I expected given the style. ![]() The bitterness holds into the aftertaste and builds a little over time. A dry and earthy malt profile is overarched by an intense, yet not overwhelming, bitterness. FlavorĬopper Legend is a consistently flavorful brew from front to back. I think the advantage here has to go to Elsewhere’s Zicke Zacke. It’s sweet and floral, offering a bright aroma that’s almost like a warm hug. Zicke Zacke offers a comparably much more intense aroma. A mild warmth is present and lingers on the nose. AromaĬopper Legend offers an aroma that’s steeped in sweet malts. Running total: Jack’s Abby 0-1 Elsewhere. It’s a vibrant and very interesting label. I enjoy both of these cans, but I have to give the edge to Elsewhere. The stylized font used for the name is quite eye grabbing. The male figure to the left is wearing the Oktoberfest check on his shirt. Lions and griffins adorn the central shield.Įlsewhere Brewing’s Zicke Zacke boasts a colorful can complete with mountains and a male and female figure. The Oktoberfest check is present but using copper and gold instead of the typical blue/blue or blue/white. ![]() Jack’s Abby’s Copper Legend lives up to the name, offering a deep copper color for much of the can. Jack’s Abby are returning for their second Master of Marzen tournament. On a rainy day, you can shelter in the Heritage Centre to learn the local history and admire Catherine Lamb’s stained glass window.Round 1, Bout 22 of Master of Marzen 2021 sees Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers (Massachusetts) vs. One of those is the 16th century Taaffe’s Castle with its spooky stories of mysterious beheadings, but also fascinating are the Tholsel (toll gate) with its tiny and now-defunct town gaol, and the 13th century Dominican Priory, with its dove cotes and murder holes. She can point out faces carved into medieval walls that you’d otherwise miss, and can give you the gossip on the medieval bigwigs whose names still grace the town’s lanes and fortified houses. Sheila knows her facts too, and the tour is packed with juicy nuggets of Carlingford history from the Gaelic rath that predated its Norman castle, through to its development as a corporated town in the Middle Ages, complete with town seal, burgesses and ruling sovereign. (Legend has it the giant lay along the shores of Carlingford Lough after an exhausting defeat of Ruscaire, the Giant of Snow and Ice, and slumbers there still, with Slieve Foye as his head.) Sheila Boyle from Carlingford Heritage Centre leads a lively town tour full of tales as tall as Fionn Mac Cumhaill himself.
